Ephesians teaches us that we are saved by grace through faith, not by our striving, deserving, improving, polishing, or performing.

σῴζω” sōzō, meaning to save, rescue, deliver, preserve, make whole. Paul is describing a completed saving act with continuing results. Believers have been saved, and they now stand in the ongoing state of that salvation.
πίστις” pistis means faith, trust, reliance, confidence, faithfulness. Here, διὰ πίστεως means “through faith.” Faith is the channel, not the cause. Grace is the source. Faith is the receiving hand.
We are saved by grace through faith, not by our own effort, but by God’s undeserved gift.
“But God, being so very rich in mercy, because of His great and wonderful love with which He loved us, even when we were dead and separated from Him because of our sins, He made us alive together with Christ (for by His grace, His undeserved favour and mercy – you have been saved from God’s judgement). Paul writes to believers who had once been dead in their trespasses and sins but were made alive together with Christ. The implication of this is important. Dead men do not climb ladders. They do not work on self improvement to achieve resurrection. They can do nothing to save themselves. They must be raised up from death. That is what grace does.
Grace is not God lowering the entrance fee to heaven. Grace is God paying the cost Himself through the cross of Jesus Christ. In the death of Jesus, divine justice and divine mercy met without either being diminished. In His resurrection, He opened the way to eternal life. Through faith, we receive what He has already accomplished.
Saved by Grace Through Faith
To be saved by grace through faith means that salvation begins in God’s heart, is secured by Christ’s finished work, and is received by trusting Him.

Works are not the root of salvation. They are the fruit of salvation. A living tree bears fruit, but the fruit did not create the tree.
Why Is Being Saved by Grace Through Faith So Important?
Grace is important because it removes pride, silences despair and places all glory upon Jesus Christ.
The ground at the foot of the cross is soberingly level. It does not matter how we see ourselves. We may feel that we are religiously upright or weary, broken, and ashamed. Whether we view ourselves as famously successful, or forgotten failures, we all stand in the same need of mercy.
Grace silences despair because salvation does not depend on our past purity, present perfection, or emotional intensity. It depends on the mercy of God in Christ. The soul that feels unworthy is often nearer the doorway than the soul polishing its own halo in the hallway.
Common Misunderstandings About Grace
Grace is often misunderstood because the human heart likes either to earn its salvation or excuse its sin. Grace allows neither.
Some imagine that grace means our choices no longer matter. Yet biblical grace never leads us into careless living. It teaches us to love what Christ loves and turn from what wounded Him.
Grace does not make sin permissible. It makes holiness possible.
Grace also gives security. If salvation were built upon human effort, it would shake every time our strength failed. But because it rests upon God’s gift, the foundation is firm. The believer may grow, stumble, repent, and mature, but Christ remains the anchor.

- Am I trying to earn what God has already offered as a gift?
- Do I truly believe that Christ’s finished work is enough for me?
- Do I see faith as striving to impress God, or as trusting the Saviour who has already acted in mercy?
- Where has self-righteousness or pride made me forget my need of grace?
- Where has shame made me doubt God’s willingness to save and restore?
- How can my life today become a more beautiful response to grace?
The gift of God does not lead us into spiritual laziness. It draws us into love, obedience, and joyful surrender.
