Festive Engagement

Festive Engagement

The festive engagement has ended;
convivial clamour has ceased.
The jovial guests who attended,
must pay for their share of the feast.

And now, with the room left deserted,
the stillness within seems intense;
a fate not postponed or averted,
by gestures of wishful pretence.

The fun of the party was fleeting;
a brief happy moment that passed;
each year, the same efforts repeating;
to find true contentment at last.

Faint echoes of music and dancing
continue in thoughts that replay,
while grim clouded days are advancing,
in shades of monotonous grey.
