Many would agree that the desire to feel a sense of safety and security is something we instinctively seek to satisfy. Feeling safe in every aspect of life is important to our overall wellbeing. It can relate to both the physical and emotional aspects of our lives. Since physical safety is connected to survival, it is likely that most people will seek to meet this need first.
Feeling Physically Safe in a Dangerous Area
You might live in a part of the world where the risk of physical danger is significant. Even if this is the case, you can still take steps to feel more safe from a physical perspective.
My primary focus in this article is not on physical safety. I merely offer these suggestions from my own experience.
Where possible, you should live in an area where crime levels are not too high. Another thing you can do is instal security cameras at the entrances to your home. Receiving a notification on your phone every time motion is detected at your front door will probably make you feel safer.
Feeling Financially Safe
Speaking of living in a safe area, we all want to live in a pleasant neighbourhood with low levels of crime. The problem with this is that these locations can be expensive and you need to take affordability into account. If feeling safe in every aspect of life is your goal, financial safety will also be important. There is nothing more unsettling than living in a place you are unable to afford.
To achieve financial safety, you should find a job that pays enough to adequately cover your expenses. However, it is one thing to find a high paying job. It is another thing entirely to cope with the stress of doing it! This can undermine our emotional safety.
How can you feel more emotionally safe at work?
Emotional safety is a wide ranging subject. So we will touch on it here only in the context of work. You can feel more emotionally safe at work by ensuring that you have the skills to do your job with confidence.
It can be quite scary to be unsure of how to perform the tasks your employer requires of you.
The best way to go about doing this is to educate yourself. Do an online course or use an artificial intelligence application to answer your questions.
Even if you have tried your best, you might still feel that your job is too stressful. If that is the case, it might be better for you to look for a job that is not as demanding. However, the prospect of looking for another job might also threaten your sense of emotional safety.
Feeling Emotionally Safe when the Future is Unknown
It can be a real challenge to feel emotionally safe when the future is unknown. This is because we are unaware of the dangers lurking down the road ahead. They might even be worse than what we are facing now. For me, the only solution for this is my faith in God.
God knows that dangers of the unknown are a valid concern for us. I think this is why He reassures us in Psalm 23.
1 The Lord is my Shepherd [to feed, to guide and to shield me], I shall not want.
2 He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still and quiet waters.
3 He refreshes and restores my soul (life); He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the [sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort and console me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You have anointed and refreshed my head with oil; My cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and mercy and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life, And I shall dwell forever [throughout all my days] in the house and in the presence of the Lord.
Psalms 23
Psalm 23 states that God is our protector and provider and if we follow Him, He will lead us to make choices that bring about the best outcomes. Even when we are in dark and dangerous situations, there is no need to fear. He is still near, protecting, guiding and comforting us. God also takes our emotional safety into account by assuring us of His protection and care when we feel threatened by people who behave like our enemies.
Psalm 23 has had a massive impact on my own life. I sometimes felt like it was the only thing that kept me going.
So feeling safe in every aspect of life is the eventual outcome when we place our trust in Him. This is something to be happy about!
