The third chapter of Jeremiah conveys an invitation from God to a nation of people who have turned away from Him. This is a timeless message that is still relevant to each of us in the present age.
God is filled with grief at the unfaithfulness of Israel and yet, He extends an invitation to them to return and dwell under His shepherding care.
God Reveals Himself as a Husband and Father
Like the voice of a father calling home his wayward children, His tone is both chastising and gentle.
“Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the Lord thy God . . . Turn, O backsliding children, saith the Lord; for I am married unto you.” Jeremiah 3:13&14
The nation of Israel is portrayed as an unfaithful wife who has gone after many lovers.
“Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the Lord.” Jeremiah 3:20
God, the faithful husband, grieves her betrayal yet does not abandon her. Instead, He extends an astonishing invitation to return, for He is merciful. These passages illustrate His unfailing love even in the face of their unfaithfulness.
“Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the Lord; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the Lord, and I will not keep anger for ever.” Jeremiah 3:12
Here is the heart of the Kingdom of God; mercy offered to the undeserving, restoration extended to the broken, and fellowship renewed with the repentant.
His treatment of us is nurturing and empowering, not domineering or exploitative.
He speaks of a time when those whom He has invited will come to Him from all nations.
“At that time, they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the Lord; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the Lord, to Jerusalem” Jeremiah 3:17
This passage portrays Jerusalem as the eternal throne of God. As a symbol of His direct rule and manifest presence, it signifies the Kingdom of Heaven established among His people. Furthermore, it describes how all nations will gather to worship the Lord, foreshadowing the global scope of the Gospel.
God Extends His Invitation to Each One of Us
Jesus speaks of this in the Gospel of John, saying:
“And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” John 12:32
The eternal reign of the Kingdom extends beyond the confinement to one temple or one nation. It is universal and the throne of God is unshakable.
Furthermore, the Kingdom of God is not merely geographical or political. It is moral and spiritual, transcending the natural world and changing hearts.
God seeks repentance from the heart, not dispassionate ritual.
We cannot help but change as we experience His compassion and overflowing mercy.
“neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.” Jeremiah 3:17
Our natural proclivities transform from evil imagination to Godly desire.
The Kingdom becomes visible as our hearts begin to reflect the heart of God.
We can invite the Holy Spirit to renew our desires and align our walk with the will of God and His desires.

God Desires a Close Relationship with Us
God ultimately longs for us to experience the joy of His presence, living in communion with Him as His children. He desires restored intimacy, not mere religion, but the awakening of an interactive relationship with Him.
“Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn away from me.” Jeremiah 3:19
God does not only seek our obedience. He desires our affection and invites us to call Him “Father.”
“Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the Lord our God.” Jeremiah 3:22
Jeremiah reminds us that God’s Kingdom is not for the perfect but for the repentant. It is a Kingdom where prodigals are welcomed home and where God Himself dwells with His people.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I hear Your calling me today to return to You. Forgive me where I have wandered, where I have trusted in other loves, where I have sought fulfilment apart from You. Write Your law upon my heart and draw me back into the shelter of Your covenant love. And Lord, gather the nations to Your throne. Let Your Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. I call You my Father, and I return to You with my whole heart in Jesus’ name, Amen”
