How to Overcome Anxiety and Find Emotional Rest

Many of us would like to find an answer to the question of how to overcome anxiety and find emotional rest. Surrounded by the noise and stress of life, most of us feel the heavy weight of responsibilities, anxieties and possibly a sense of inner exhaustion.

In the midst of all of this, the Lord extends a timeless invitation:

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

Jesus does not say, “Fix yourself first, before you come,” or “Strive a bit harder.” Instead, He calls us just as we are, tired, burdened, anxious, and offers rest. This is not merely physical rest but rest for our minds and emotions. It is a rest derived from trust. In Philippians, it is described in this way.

“The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:5~7

This is the quiet assurance that God is both able and willing to bear what we feel is beyond out strength.

The Message Bible renders this verse with refreshing eloquence.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28~30

How to overcome Anxiety and Find Emotional Rest with Christian Meditation

Do you feel like you are carrying a heavy burden of anxiety? Picture yourself laying it down before the Lord in prayer, and allow His Spirit to refresh you. Perhaps today is less about what you do and more about simply being with the One who loves you.

“Cast your burden on the Lord [release it] and He will sustain and uphold you.” Psalm 55:22

What is Christian Meditation?

In the context of Christian devotion, meditation is not the emptying of the mind, as in some Eastern traditions. It is actually the filling of  the mind, specifically, with the Word of God, His promises, His presence, and His character.

The Hebrew word often translated as meditate in Scripture is “hagah,”. It carries connotations of murmuring or softly speaking. Like a cow chewing the cud, it involves turning a thought over again and again in your mind.

“But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” Psalm 1:2

Biblical meditation can also involve picturing yourself with Jesus. This is not fantasy, but spiritual engagement. It is entering into His presence by faith, as the Holy Spirit illuminates the truth of Scripture to your heart. You might imagine sitting beside Him in a peaceful setting, or walking with Him along a river or hillside, hearing His words as real and personal.

It is  not about conjuring an image to manipulate emotion but about relational nearness; an act of the heart that says:

“Speak, for your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:10

It is often during these quiet moments that Scripture ceases to be information and becomes a living and transformative experience.  In this way, we can start to discover how to overcome anxiety and find emotional rest.

Picture yourself with Jesus now in prayer. Hand over to Him the burden of your anxieties that you feel you can no longer carry.
